When you organize using directories that have short, descriptive tags, there can be an SEO benefit. But I think a lot of people overestimate the importance of taxonomies for searching rankings. Millions of pages rank well for competing phrases despite ranking poorly or in a “bad” URL structure. But one definite advantage of having a simple directory structure is in your Analytics. For example, if all recipes are in the /recipes/ folder , you can quickly filter them in the all pages report. If they're not in one folder (maybe they all live in the root), you'll need some fancy Analytics setup to see them all in one report.

I have long used taxonomies and tags behind the scenes to create auto-updating topic landing pages on my blog. For example, I have several directory-style pages on my site (like my income report homepage: https://www.ryrob.com/income/ and the podcast homepage: https: //www.ryrob.com/podcast/) which will be automatically updated when a new post is posted in the category associated with this page. Switching to using taxonomies here by just checking a category box now saves me a lot of time every week compared to when I used to manually update a static page with new content so to do something like this. ryan robinson ryan robinson I'm a blogger and podcast host who teaches 400,000 readers a month how to start and grow a profitable side business.
